Art communicates emotions

Patterned Paintings

This series evolved out of my painting of Japanese kimono and family crest patterns, and my natural landscape series.  By melding both styles, landscapes filled with patterns create vibrant new worlds.  It is a merging of the natural world and abstract designs.  The patterns have organic and geometric inspirations.

For this series, I used either acrylic or oil paints.  This series allows me to expand on my heritage and emotional well-being.

“I am in awe of the patience and perseverance it must have taken to complete ‘Coral Reef.’  I love your use of colors as well, and the way the light is hitting the reef.”

Peter and I stopped by the other day and were both delighted with your exhibit. Such variety! “Coral Reef” lived up to it’s prize; It’s a picture to get lost in. A couple of pictures stay in my mind – the jelly fish shimmering with light, the wonderful colors of the very dignified sea horse, the march of color up (or down) the basket weave and “Plumeria”, which will probably become my standard of what can be done in watercolor. And then there are the pattern pictures which I found somehow both unfamiliar and familiar, as though I might have read novels a long time ago which had those scenes as backdrops. Well done, Keiko!

There is a richness in your work that I envy. It gives depth to your subjects. Your use of line and color are exceptional. I particularly appreciaite “Blow”, living and sailing on Lake Michigan. The wave curl in the foreground gives depth and perspective to your work. Congratulations.

Hi Sid,
The pattern paintings tend to be flat. My aim is to achieve as much a 3-D form as possible. As you see, some are successful, and some are not.
